Windows Vista Service Pack 2

Microsoft has finally released the Windows Vista Service Pack 2 after releasing the beta version late last year.

The Vista SP2 update includes new support for recording Blu-ray discs straight from the Vista OS, updated support for Bluetooth v2.1, and bug fixes that address slow shutdowns and mysterious crashes.

Vista SP2 can now be downloaded from Microsoft’s Download Center. However, anyone who had been running the beta of the service pack, which was released late last year, will have to remove it before proceeding with the install.

“Over the weekend, some of you may have received an e-mail from us reminding you that the Windows 7 Beta expires on Aug. 1, 2009,” Brandon LeBlanc, a spokesperson for Microsoft, wrote on the official Windows blog.

The release features support for five languages: English, German, Spanish, French and Japanese.

Vista to Stay Until 2011

Microsoft will not dump Vista when Windows 7 launches and plans to keep selling it to computer makers, system builders, volume licensees and consumers at retail until at least January 2011.

Microsoft also confirmed that the company would stop supporting all versions of Vista in April 2012. However, Microsoft will allow enterprise customers to downgrade to Vista from a pre-installed version of Windows 7.

Vista SP2 Released to Manufacturing

Microsoft announced the release to manufacturing of Windows Vista SP2 and Windows Server 2008 SP2 on April 28, 2009.

Microsoft says that Vista SP2 is a unified service pack with a single installer for both Windows Server 2008 and Vista computers. SP2 is expected to be available in Q2 2009.

This second release candidate includes Windows Search 4.0, Bluetooth 2.1 feature pack, the ability to record data on to Blu-Ray media natively in Windows Vista, the addition of Windows Connect Now for simpler Wi-Fi configuration, and an exFAT file system that supports UTC timestamps.

Vista SP2 and Server 2008 Updates Soon

It is being reported on various sources that the release of Windows Vista service pack 2 and updates for Windows Server 2008 are not far off.

The candidate build for Vista sp2 and ws 2008 is currently being tested but a date for the public release is unknown yet.

We will have more news as we get it.

Internet Explorer 8 RC1

Microsoft has plans to deliver the first release candidate of the newest version Internet Explorer on Monday.

“We’re about to release [IE8 RC1] for Windows Vista and Windows XP,” said Microsoft’s Frank Olivier, a user experience program manager. “Over the past months, our compatibility team has been hard at work, finding and fixing bugs that cause site rendering issues,” Olivier wrote. “Due to the different release schedules for Windows 7 Beta and IE8 RC1, some of these bug fixes didn’t make it into Windows 7 Beta.”

Microsoft originally had hoped to release the final version of IE8 before the end of 2008 but the release date had to be pushed back

Windows Vista SP2 Delayed

In another blow to Vista the SP2 will be out later than expected.

Microsoft has annonced it will delay the release of Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) by at least a month, and the company will now ship it to manufacturing sometime in May or June.  SP2 was originally intended to be released this February, with the Release to Manufacturing (SP2 RTM) scheduled for April.

The first beta of SP2 was made available in December of last year. Right now, Microsoft is undoubtedly rushing to get Vista SP2 out well ahead of the release of Windows 7, its next major operating system.

Ballmer Says Its Ok to Skip Vista

In a recent conference Steve Ballmer said its ok to wait for Windows 7 and skip Vista altogether.

Many businesses and general users are thinking of skipping straight from Windows XP to Windows 7, which is due to be released sometime next year. In fact, up to 61% of respondents were thinking of skipping Vista.

While Ballmer did say its ok to skip, he still recommends the rollout of Vista if possible. Windows 7 will be a better version of Vista and it will be fully compatible with Vista, so rolling out to Vista is still not a bad thing.

While there have been many critics of Vista, the adoption rate of Vista has been two times faster than XP at two years in.

We personally think Vista is a solid OS and would recommend anyone to make the change. We have also seen Windows 7 and it is definitely an improvement, but by using Vista you will be readied for Windows 7. With Vista and a few tweaks its a great OS.

Windows Vista Red

From the 15th of December this year you can buy special ‘red’ editions of Windows Vista Ultimate that will raise money for developing a vaccine to Aids.

Windows Vista Red

The red version will have a few bonus extras like screensavers wallpapers, gadgets and Dreamscene, but the main point of this special version is to create more awareness around the world of this deadly virus.

Vista now joins an odd group of mega-brands linked to (RED), including struggling Starbucks and GAP. American Express and Apple have also signed on. And on World AIDS Day, Microsoft’s MSN hosted the launch of a (RED) music service.

The Red version of Vista Ultimate will be available for $219.95; students can qualify for the $64.95 pricing via Microsoft’s Web site also.

SP2 Set for Release Next April

Windows Vista service pack 2 (sp2) is set for an April 2009 release says reports released by many tech websites.  SP2 is set to be released with;

  • Windows Search 4.0
  • Bluetooth 2.1 feature pack
  • The ability to record data on to Blu-Ray media “natively” in Vista
  • A simplified tool for configuring Wi-Fi
  • exFAT file system will be able to support Coordianted Universal Time (UTC) timestamps

The beta version of SP2 was released in October this year so we are very interested like thousands of others as to just how good SP2 will be in the full release.

Gates and Seinfeld Commercial the Worst

Remember those commercials for Windows Vista with Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld that were supposed to help rejuvenate the brand?

You have probably long forgotten, so here are the commercials in case you want to see them again:

Well this was a 300 million dollar ad campaign and personally I think the money could have been better spent and so do most other people that were surveyed. In a recent survey which appears on Advertising Age here, the Seinfeld and Gates commercial was rated as the worst commercial (or best worst ad).  However, Apple was rated as no 1. I think its time for Microsoft to hire a new ad agency.
