Many users of Google’s free e-mail service Gmail were stranded Tuesday afternoon when they logged on to find the service no longer working.
It wasn’t immediately clear what caused Tuesday’s disruption, which led Gmail users to get an “Unable to reach Gmail” error message as their computers tried repeatedly to reconnect to the service. Google said it was investigating.
Complaints began appearing on Twitter around 4 p.m. EDT. In a 4:02 p.m. EDT post on its Apps Status page, Google confirmed that Gmail was suffering an outage.
Google has kept its major outages relatively rare. Gmail went down for more than two hours in February and about the same length of time in August 2008. In May, the search engine was unavailable to many users for about an hour.
Social networking sites Twitter and Facebook suffered attacks on Thursday from a hacker who temporarily shut down both sites. They are both believed to be all OK now and up and running.
Microsoft, has suffered its first drop in revenue since it went public in 1986 as the global economic downturn savages its once indestructible sales of PC’s.
The company cited weaker personal computer and server markets and said it also took $710 million in charges.
Client revenue (ie Windows for PCs) was worst hit: revenues fell from $4.0bn to $3.4bn, and profits from $3.1bn to $2.5bn.
“While market conditions remained weak during the quarter, I was pleased with the organization’s ability to offset revenue pressures with the swift implementation of cost-savings initiatives,” said Chris Liddell, the chief financial officer for Microsoft.
