Windows Vista Command Line Reference

Below is a list of most of the command line functions that are available in Windows Vista. The majority of these also work in Windows XP.

Command Description
assoc Displays or modifies file extension associations
arp Displays and modifies entries in the Address Resolution Protocol
at Schedules commands and programs to run on a computer
attrib Displays or changes file attributes
auditpol Displays information about and performs functions to manipulate audit policies
break Sets or clears extended CTRL+C checking
bcdedit Sets properties in boot database to control boot loading
bootcfg Configures, queries, or changes Boot.ini file settings
cacls Displays or modifies access control lists (ACLs) of files
call Calls one batch program from another
cd Displays the name of or changes the current directory
change Changes terminal server settings for logons, COM port mappings, and install mode
chcp Displays or sets the active code page number
chdir Displays the name of or changes the current directory
chglogon Enables or disables logons from client sessions on a terminal server, or displays current logon status
chkdsk Checks a disk and displays a status report
chkntfs Displays or modifies the checking of disk at boot time
choice Prompts the user to select one item from a list of single-character choices in a batch program, and then returns the index of the selected choice
clip Redirects command output from the command line to the Windows clipboard
cls Clears the screen
cmd Starts a new instance of the Windows command interpreter
cmdkey Creates, lists, and deletes stored user names and passwords or credentials
color Sets the default console foreground and background colors
comp Compares the contents of two files or sets of files
compact Displays or alters the compression of files on NTFS partitions
convert Converts FAT volumes to NTFS. You cannot convert the
current drive
copy Copies one or more files to another location
cscript Windows Script Host
date Displays or sets the date
defrag Locates and consolidates fragmented files on local volumes to improve system performance
del Deletes one or more files
dir Displays a list of files and subdirectories in a directory
diskcomp Compares the contents of two floppy disks
diskcopy Copies the contents of one floppy disk to another
diskpart Displays or configures Disk Partition properties
diskRAID DiskRAID is a command-line tool that enables you to configure and manage redundant array of independent (or inexpensive) disks (RAID) storage subsystems
doskey Edits command lines, recalls Windows commands, and creates macros
driverquery Displays current device driver status and properties
drwatson Run the Dr Watson debugger
dvdplay Run Windows Media Player
echo Displays messages, or turns command echoing on or off
endlocal Ends localization of environment changes in a batch file
erase Deletes one or more files
exit Quits the CMD.EXE program (command interpreter)
expand File expansion utility
fc Compares two files or sets of files, and displays the differences
between them
find Searches for a text string in a file or files
findstr Searches for strings in files
for Runs a specified command for each file in a set of files
forfiles Selects and executes a command on a file or set of files
format Formats a disk for use with Windows
freedisk Checks to see if the specified amount of disk space is available before continuing with an installation process
fsutil Displays or configures the file system properties
ftp File transfer protocol
ftype Displays or modifies file types used in file extension associations
getmac Get the mac address
goto Directs the Windows command interpreter to a labeled line in a
batch program
gpresult Displays Group Policy information for machine or user
graftabl Enables Windows to display an extended character set in graphics mode
help Provides Help information for Windows commands
hostname Get the hostname
icacls Displays or modifies discretionary access control lists (DACLs) on specified files, and applies stored DACLs to files in specified directories
if Performs conditional processing in batch programs
ipconfig Windows IP Configuration utility
label Creates, changes, or deletes the volume label of a disk
logman Logman creates and manages Event Trace Session and Performance logs and supports many functions of Performance Monitor from the command line
logoff Logs off a user from a session on a terminal server and deletes the session from the server
lpr Sends a file to a computer or printer sharing device running the Line Printer Daemon (LPD) service in preparation for printing
magnify Open Windows Magnify program
mapadmin You can use Mapadmin to manage User Name Mapping for Microsoft Services for Network File System
md Creates a directory
mem Provides comuter memory information
mkdir Creates a directory
mklink Creates Symbolic Links and Hard Links
mode Configures a system device
more Displays output one screen at a time
move Moves one or more files from one directory to another directory
mountvol Creates, deletes, or lists a volume mount point
mrt Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool
msconfig Open the msconfig utility
msg Sends a message to a user on a terminal server
mspaint Open Microsoft Paint
mstsc Creates connections to terminal servers or other remote computers, edits an existing Remote Desktop Connection (.rdp) configuration file, and migrates legacy connection files that were created with Client Connection Manager to new .rdp connection files
net computer Adds or deletes a computer from a domain database
net group Adds, displays, or modifies global groups in domains
net print Displays information about a specified printer queue, displays information about a specified print job, or controls a specified print job
netstat Connection information
notepad Open the Notepad application
nslookup Network lookup utility
odbcconf ODBC database configuration
openfiles Displays files opened by remote users for a file share
path Displays or sets a search path for executable files
pause Suspends processing of a batch file and displays a message
perfmon Start Windows Reliability and Performance Monitor in a specific standalone mode
ping Ping utility
popd Restores the previous value of the current directory saved by PUSHD
print Prints a text file
prompt Changes the Windows command prompt
pushd Saves the current directory then changes it
qprocess Displays information about processes that are running on a terminal server
query Displays information about processes, sessions, and terminal servers
quser Displays information about user sessions on a terminal server
rd Removes a directory
recover Recovers readable information from a bad or defective disk
regedit Open the registry editor
rem Records comments (remarks) in batch files or CONFIG.SYS
ren Renames a file or files
rename Renames a file or files
replace Replaces files
rmdir Removes a directory
robocopy Advanced utility to copy files and directory trees
set Displays, sets, or removes Windows environment variables
setlocal Begins localization of environment changes in a batch file
sc Displays or configures services (background processes)
schtasks Schedules commands and programs to run on a computer
shift Shifts the position of replaceable parameters in batch files
shutdown Allows proper local or remote shutdown of machine
sort Sorts input
start Starts a separate window to run a specified program or command
subst Associates a path with a drive letter
systeminfo Displays machine specific properties and configuration
tasklist Displays all currently running tasks including services
taskkill Kill or stop a running process or application
time Displays or sets the system time
title Sets the window title for a CMD.EXE session
tracert Run a trace route
tree Graphically displays the directory structure of a drive or path
type Displays the contents of a text file
ver Displays the Windows version
verify Tells Windows whether to verify that your files are written
correctly to a disk
vol Displays a disk volume label and serial number
vssadmin Volume Shadow Copy Service program
where Displays the location of files that match the given search pattern
whoami Displays user, group and privileges information for the user who is currently logged on to the local system
winsat winsat assesses various features, capabilities, and attributes of a computer running Windows Vista
wmic Displays WMI information inside
xcopy Copies files and directory trees
